Re-engaging Romance in Math Education: #whatreallymatters?

Do you believe in Romance? Have you ever been swept off of your feet?

Regardless your answer or perspectives about this word — a word that can play both the roles of noun or verb very well— the teaching and learning of mathematics requires Romance more than we know.

​Merriam-Webster
 defines Romance as follows: “an emotional attraction or aura belonging to an especially heroic era, adventure, or activity.”

Let’s, for a moment, posit that learning mathematics requires Romance — that it requires an attraction to something legendary or to adventure. And that without it, it’d be nearly impossible to experience success with teaching and learning ← → learning and teaching mathematics. That seems quite contrary to the decades-old mainstay for ‘success’ in school mathematics: Precision.
